Cecilia began working in clay after taking a ceramics course while in undergrad. She has always considered herself to be a creative individual but had never been exposed to the potter’s wheel before. She immediately became obsessed with the medium and poured herself into learning various wheel-throwing techniques. After graduating from Furman University in May 2023, Cecilia moved to Asheville, North Carolina to be a summer resident at Odyssey ClayWorks. She continued working at the studio as an assistant, which deepened her knowledge of ceramic processes and enabled her to gain teaching skills. Cecilia recently spent six months in Taos, New Mexico where she focused on creating a cohesive body of work. She is currently based in upstate South Carolina and is working out of the studios at Main & Maxwell, located within the Greenwood Building.

Artist Statement:

I consider clay to be the vessel that connects my appreciation for physical nature along with my passion for cultivating community through creativity. Ceramics is such a withstanding yet fragile medium, and I find the entire process so beautiful and enticing; how we are capable of using materials from the earth to make functional pieces of art. My work is focused around form and symmetry, and I derive the most satisfaction from using the wheel. Throwing provides me ease, yet challenges myself at the same time. I am captivated by the ideals of what constitutes a perfect form, and I create pieces that are both visually pleasing and enjoyable to use. For surface, I use slip to paint various designs that compliment my glazes. My work is elegant and refined, and it is my aspiration for my pieces to uplift one’s everyday routines, whether that be drinking a comforting beverage or brightening up a living space.
